BILLION DOLLAR BUSINESS

Abortion is nasty business. And it is big business. Since its decriminalisation less than 30 years ago, abortion has grown into a hundred billion dollar industry a year worldwide. More than one hundred and twenty thousand women each day, almost fifty million per year, resort to abortion and then to its various birth control subsidiaries. It has thus become the most frequently performed surgical operation. And to the forefront is International Planned Parenthood Federation and its world-wide affiliates.

Planned Parenthood is the world's oldest, largest, and best-organised provider of abortion and birth control services. From its humble beginnings around the turn of the century, when the entire shoestring operation consisted of a two-room makeshift clinic in a rundown Brooklyn neighbourhood staffed by three untrained volunteers, it has expanded dramatically into a multi-billion-dollar international conglomerate with programmes and activities in one hundred and twenty nations on every continent.

Utilising this considerable wealth, manpower, and influence, Planned Parenthood has muscled its way into virtually every facet of modern life. It now plays a strategic role in the health and social services community. It is actively involved in both advertising and programming in the mass media. It exerts a major influence on public and private education.

But despite this nearly omnipresent intrusion into family, Church, State and culture, Planned Parenthood has somehow managed to manufacture for itself a sterling reputation. It has brokered its abortion trade into a public image that is very nearly unassailable.

It has a reputation for providing effective and professional social services for the needy. It has a reputation for maintaining the right and liberties of the weak, the desperate, the frightened, and the downtrodden. It has a reputation for advocating low-cost, readily available counselling and health care services for women.

All that glitters, however, is not gold. Just as Planned Parenthood's wealth and prestige has been built on death, defilement, and destruction, its reputation has been built on deception, disinformation, and distortion. It is a reputation built on illusions. Planned Parenthood claims to advocate the freedom of women to choose if and when they will have children, without government interference. But this is a lie!

Planned Parenthood is anything but a "pro-choice" organisation. And it is anything but a populist, non-interventionist champion of liberty against government coercion.

POPULATION CONTROL MEASURES

The truth is that from its very inception, Planned Parenthood has sought mandatory population control measures - measures carefully designed to deny the freedom to choose. Over the years it has proposed that our government implement such things as "compulsory abortion for out-of-wedlock pregnancies," federal entitlement "payments to encourage abortion," "compulsory sterilisation for those who have already had two children," and "tax penalties" for existing large families.

Although Planned Parenthood's sterilisation crusade has seen ready acceptance in the western world from time to time, especially among the ill, the infirm, the poor, and the incarcerated, most of its other coercive programmes have been embraced enthusiastically in a number of other countries.

China, for example has taken Planned Parenthood's suggestions to heart, launching a brutal no-holds-barred, one-child-per-couple policy. Nearly one hundred million forced abortions, mandatory sterilisations, and coercive infanticides later, Planned Parenthood continues to maintain that the communist government's genocidal approach to population control is a "model of efficiency."

Similar draconian measures have been implemented at Planned Parenthood's behest in dozens of countries throughout the Third World. Providing many of these with detailed restraints and quotas, suggested compulsory incentives and disincentives, and assistance in circumventing public opinion and moral opposition, Planned Parenthood has taken the lead in the international campaign to crush the rights of women to choose if and when they will have children.

The slow advance of Planned Parenthood's coercive programmes has eroded freedom of choice in the western world as well. Parents often cannot choose to save the lives of their unborn babies. Pro-Life advocates often cannot choose to exercise their first amendment right in front of abortionaries and clinics. Alternative centres for women with crisis pregnancies often cannot choose to counsel, lobby, solicit, or advertise on an equal basis with abortuaries.

RACIST AND ENEMY OF THE POOR

Planned Parenthood's pose as a champion of the underprivileged is a cruel hoax foisted on the uninformed and unsuspecting. The truth is Planned Parenthood appears to want to eliminate the poor, not serve them. Animosity toward the weak and lowly has been its hallmark from its earliest days. In fact, its entire programme of family limitation was designed to foster an elitist pogrom against the underclasses.

To this day the thrust of Planned Parenthood's literature focuses on the terrible burden that the poor place on the rich. It continually reminds us of the costs that welfare mothers incur for the elite. It constantly devises new plans to penetrate Black, Hispanic, and ethnic communities with its crippling message of eugenic racism. It seems that its only use for the deprived and rejected is as bait for huge federal subsidies and foundation grants. "If we must have welfare," Sanger argued, "give it to the rich, not to the poor." Her organisation has for years attempted to translate that philosophy into public policy.

During the 1980's Planned Parenthood in the USA shifted its focus from community-based clinics to school-based clinics. Of the over one hundred school-based clinics that have opened nationwide in the last decade, none have been at substantially all-white schools. None have been at suburban middle-class schools. Virtually all have been at Black, minority, or ethnic schools. In most Black communities in the US abortions outstrip births by as much as three-to-one.

Thirty-two percent of all abortions in the US are performed on minority mothers. The sterilisation rate among Blacks is 45% higher than among Whites. Among Hispanics the rate is 30% higher. As many as 42% of all American Indian women and 35% of all Puerto Rican women have been sterilised. In Houston, Texas and Fort Wayne, Indiana, discount coupons, pop records and sponsored dances have been used by Planned Parenthood to lure minority women into their clinics. In other cities clients are bribed with cash or prizes.

Black Financial Analyst William L. Davis argues,

"There is no way to escape the implication. When an organisation has a history of racism, when its literature is openly racist, when its goals are self-consciously racial, and when its programs invariably revolve around race, it doesn't take an expert to realise that the organisation is indeed racist. Really now, how can anyone believe anything about Planned Parenthood except that it is a hive of elitist bigotry, prejudice, and bias? Just because the organisation has a smattering of minority staffers in key positions does nothing to dispel the plain facts."

Puerto Rico has the highest rate of sterilisation in the world, some 35 percent of women of childbearing age have been sterilised. This compares with 5 percent in India and 3 percent in Pakistan. These public sterilisation programs were propelled along by intense political propaganda which led people to believe that the economic crisis and unemployment was due to the increase in population.

It is significant to note that 90 percent of these sterilisation of brown-skinned women were paid for by the United States government! Planned Parenthood has Family Planning International Assistance programs at work in at least 102 nations. These birth control clinics use medical supplies from the United States government. The U.S. Agency for International Development (AID) provided some $732 million for international population program assistance from 1965-75. The IPPF is the largest quasi-governmental agency promoting abortion around the world via its extensive chain of clinics and affiliates.

FUNDING OF THIRD WORLD ABORTIONS

In October 2000, it was discovered that the International Planned Parenthood Federation was illegally using U.S Aid monies to finance abortions in Third World countries. The U.S. National Accounting Office said the IPPF and eight other "family planning" groups had refused to comply with a U.S. congressional mandate that U.S. Aid grantees cease abortion activities as a condition of funding. The IPPF claimed its abortion funding, using U.S. money, was "inadvertent."

In October 2001, Cheryllyn Dudley, a South African MP, put forth a notice of motion in the national assembly that, "Condemns the actions of Planned Parenthood and the United Nations Population Fund, who are advancing their unscrupulous agenda in the name of charity, taking advantage of people when they are most vulnerable ... Planned Parenthood alone has killed more New Yorkers than Osama bin Laden has, and these figures pale in comparison with the children they have murdered in Africa, Asia and South America." The motion also called PP a "most insidious enemy ... (who) murders the unborn children of the world in broad daylight."
