Dr. Elvira Parravicini on perinatal hospice care: 'The birth of these children is a moment of joy for their families'

A major medical conference took place this past January that was groundbreaking as it focused on the care and treatment of babies prenatally diagnosed with severe life limiting conditions.  The Perinatal Conference was the first of its kind in Ireland – and attendees heard from both medical professionals and parents whose children has these serious conditions.

One of the highlights of the conference was the talk given by the inspirational Dr. Elvira Parravicini.  Dr. Parravicini is a neonatologist at New York Presbyterian Hospital and  a professor of pediatrics at Columbia University.  Dr. Parravincini is also a leader in the movement for perinatal hospice care and is the found and medical director of the Neonatal Comfort Care Program at Columbia University Medical Center.

Dr. Parravicini’s presentation at the Conference was both informative and inspiring as she discussed ways to allow severely disabled babies to live with dignity for as long as they can and provide parents with the chance to be parents.  In Dr. Parravicini’s words, “Before death there is life, and the moment of birth for these families is a moment of joy”.

Her entire talk is definitely worth a watch.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cfuf8KMVsU
