France bans video of children with Down Syndrome – cites abortion as reason

Shocking and mind boggling news came out this week from France that has sparked outrage from all around the world.  The French State Council rejected an appeal made by the Down Syndrome community when it upheld a ban on a video featuring children with Down Syndrome on the ground that the children were too happy and it might make women who have aborted babies with Down Syndrome feel bad.

It may sound unbelievable but it is true.  The award winning video entitled “Dear Future Mom features children with Down Syndrome reassuring future mothers that their children would be able to live happy and fulfilling live even with Down Syndrome.  The children told future mothers not to be afraid and assured them that their kids would be able to do so many things including speak, go to school, and have job.  The video is both beautiful and heart warming.

However, the State Council declared that the video was unacceptable and that showing the happy images of these children was “inappropriate” because people’s expression of happiness was “likely to disturb the conscience of women who had lawfully made different personal life choices”.

In reality, it is the French State Council’s position that is offensive. 96% of babies prenatally diagnosed with Down’s in France are aborted.  Internationally the estimate is roughly 90% of these babies.  This is the shocking and horrifying truth.

The “personal life choice” the State Council defends so ardently is the choice to kill a baby simply because he or she has a disability.  This, and the fact that they know think Down Syndrome children should not even be seen, demonstrates the truly discriminatory nature of abortion culture.

It is to be hoped that Ireland’s laws continue to defend the right to life of all it’s people, including those with Down’s.  Let us work and pray that Ireland does not follow France’s example in this shocking stance against the right to life of children with Down Syndrome. Abortion discriminates but Ireland shouldn’t.
