NEW: At 16 days the preborn baby’s heart begins to beat

New research from Oxford University has revealed that an unborn baby’s heart begins to beat at just 16 days after conception.  Previously it was thought that the baby’s heart began beating 21 days post-conception.

This new information was gained from research funded by the British Heart Foundation.  This fact was discovered as a result of scientists trying to better understand the development of the heart and discover what causes heart defects that development in utero.

“By finding out how the heart first starts to beat and how problems can arise in heart development, we are one step closer to being able to prevent heart conditions from arising during pregnancy,” Professor Paul Riley, who led the project, stated. “We also hope that this new research will help us to learn how the beating of new heart muscle cells might be triggered in replaced muscle after a heart attack.”

Researchers hope that this discovery will help them treat and prevent dangerous heart conditions in unborn babies.

This information continues to show that, contrary to the arguments of abortion supports, the unborn baby is distinct and separate person from the mother- even so early in the pregnancy.  The unborn child is not just a “clump of cells” but its own person.  Science is on the side of the pro-life movement.
