Poll shows most voters reject message of Repeal the 8th abortion campaign

The Life Institute has said that today’s Irish Times/Ipsos-MRBI poll shows that abortion campaigners have utterly failed to swing voter support in favour of abortion-on-demand, despite massive media support and global funding from billionaires like George Soros.

Niamh Uí Bhriain of the Life Institute said that the findings of the poll showed that the vast majority of people leaned pro-life and were uncomfortable with the provision of abortion.

“After three solid years of massive media support and millions being pumped in from abroad for abortion campaigners, they are left with just 19% of people agreeing with their stance on abortion – just 19% supporting a UK model of abortion. That is really remarkable, and shows that the Irish people have a very good understanding of the indisputable fact that the preborn baby is a human being, and that we need to protect both mother and baby,” said the Life Institute spokeswoman.

“We’re seeing some of the results of this poll reflected in our door-to-door canvass, where people are largely pro-life but need more information, particularly in relation to where the baby has a life-limiting condition, or has been conceived in rape. Once the facts are shared with people, away from the hype of the media debate, it is clear to most people of goodwill that killing a baby is not the answer, and that we need to provide better support and care instead,” she added.

“It is very significant that there is such  a substantial majority who are totally or mostly pro-life. The problem for abortion supporters is that they can’t get away from the fact that abortion kills a baby, and all the #shoutmyabortion campaigns and the strident demands to treat the baby as being utterly disposable have clearly not worked with the Irish people,” said Ms Uí Bhriain.

She said the realisation that repealing the right to life would lead to a UK model of abortion would be a huge stumbling block for voters. “Irish people have a very educated understanding of the humanity of the baby, and a strong instinct to protect those who are vulnerable. We are a compassionate and progressive society and I believe we will continue to show leadership to the world in protecting and loving both mother and baby,” she said.

Ms Uí Bhriain said that she believed that a referendum to Repeal the 8th would be lost on the terms sought by abortion campaigners and that the government was well aware of this and therefore reluctant to rush to referendum.
