Pro-life victory in Poland

Amazing news this week in Poland as the initial vote on a citizen-led pro-life bill was passed through Parliament in the initial vote.

Poland is one of the most pro-life countries in Europe, but currently allows abortion when babies have a severe disability or was conceived in rape.  This bill would restrict abortion beyond those exceptions.

The bill was the result of a “Stop Abortion” citizens’ initiative which gathered more than 450,000 signatures, and has received great support from a huge portion of the Polish public, top politicians, and the Catholic Church.  58% of Poles have expressed support for the bill, with higher percentages of young people supporting the pro-life position.

LifeNews reports, “Members of Parliament voted 267 – 154 to send the “Stop Abortion” proposal to commissions, which means that it will be debated for an indefinite period, before a final bill is written and put to a parliamentary vote. The proposal was passed by such a wide margin that it is very likely that a pro-life law will ultimately be passed.”

The Wall Street Journal reported <http://www.wsj.com/articles/poland-considers-near-complete-abortion-ban-1474566994> on law professor Joanna Banasiuk who defended the bill in the opening debate.

“Abortion means a massacre of children,“ she said. ”It means hell for women and moral discredit for men, first imposed by Hitler’s thugs and then introduced by the Communist regime on a mass scale,” she added, referring to the decision by Nazi German occupying forces during World War II to give Polish women access to abortion, a policy continued after the war.

Ewa Kowalewska, director of Human Life International Poland, expressed her delight in the passage of the bill, especially as many Polish people understand that standing in defense of life could hurt their country financially. “We are very pleased to see such a strong vote for life, especially since members know they will be facing economic threats from the European Union,” Ms. Kowalewska stated.

The pro-life citizens’ initiative began to gain massive support last year after a horrific story came to the public’s about a late-term baby who allegedly was born alive after a failed abortion attempt at a Warsaw hospital  <http://www.lifenews.com/2016/03/28/baby-who-screamed-for-an-hour-while-left-to-die-after-botched-abortion-causes-global-outrage/> and screamed for an hour as it was left to die.  The brutal reality of abortion made many see that they did not want abortion legal in their country.

It is to be hoped that this Polish victory will be followed by many pro-life victories around the world.
